Medical lasers
deliver a specific band of light that will generally treat one skin
problem. California Cosmetic Laser Clinic’s IPL Photo rejuvenation
System, delivers a broad band of pulsed light, so they are an
alternative to laser surgery, chemical peels and it has no downtime!
Following a treatment, most patients can go back to their usual
activities and can immediately apply make-up. IPL is a safe,
non-invasive solution that can be customized to your individual needs
and will provide superior cosmetic results and high levels of
satisfaction. After only the first treatment, skin feels smoother and
appears more even toned.
How many and how
often will I need the treatments?
A series of at
least 5 treatments is needed to obtain the best results. Some patients
may benefit from more treatments depending on the severity of the
condition treated. Treatments are given 4-6 weeks apart. Based on the
high level of demand for this procedure, many offices are offering
inappropriate substitutes. Don't be fooled by other practices that give
only a single "pass" with the machine or only treat "part" of the face
with a machine that is not a true IPL machine.
How much does it
cost?
Costs are per
treatment, and compared to other aesthetic surgeries, it is affordable
and competitively priced. It is more expensive than microdermabrasion or
light chemical peels, and less expensive than laser resurfacing or a
facelift. It is not typically covered by health insurance.
What is an IPL
treatment like?
Each
IPL treatment takes about 30-45 minutes. Patients tolerate the
non-invasive procedure very well. Before treatment, a cold gel is
applied to the area treated, and you may be given dark glasses to
protect your eyes from the bright light. During the treatment, you will
hear a beep each time the machine is used. Afterwards, for a few minutes
or hours, the skin may be flushed and appear irritated. Brown spots will
actually be slightly darker at first. These initial effects usually fade
within hours, but can occasionally last for a few days.
What are the
expected results?
Following IPL
there is a gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing and acne-like
breakouts. Treated skin will become smoother with a reduction in fine
wrinkles and pore size as well as a fading of sun spots or uneven
pigmentation. In time, the results are smoother, healthier,
younger-appearing skin.
Is it safe?
IPL is
non-invasive and very safe. You can usually return directly to work and
apply makeup immediately. You can resume all your activities (except sun
exposure) immediately. Very rarely, temporary mild bruising or
blistering may occur in the treated areas, which will resolve in a few
days.

Preparation before your treatment:
-
You must
not be tanned on the treated areas! Avoid self-tanners for 2 weeks
prior to your appointment.
-
The treated
area(s) must be clean, without makeup.
What to expect after your treatment:
After IPL your
skin may appear red for up to several hours. You may also develop a
brown, freckled appearance, which looks like “coffee grinds”. This
occurs in areas of brown pigmentation and can last several days to a
week. If Levulan or higher power levels have enhanced your treatment,
crusting, redness and bruising may occur.
