Peels
With time and
sun exposure, there is a gradual slow-down in the rate at which old
cells leave the surface of the skin and are replaced by newer cells.
This results in a surface layer of dead skin cells that are responsible
for the appearance of aged skin. If you have superficial wrinkles of the
face, neck, upper chest, arms, uneven pigmentation problems, enlarged
facial pores, superficial acne scars of the face, or age spots, a peel
may be able to give you a smoother, youthful appearing skin of more
uniform color.
What is a
Glycolic/ Jessner peel?
A Glycolic/Jessner peel is comprised of an all
natural alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane. Alpha Hydroxy acids
occur naturally in certain fruits and foods. Of all the alpha hydroxy
acids, Glycolic Acid is the most promising for skin rejuvenation because
it has the smallest molecular size. This small molecular size allows it
to penetrate the outer layer of skin to a greater extent than any other
alpha hydroxy acid.

How does it
work?
First -
Done
on an outpatient basis, light peels do not require any anesthesia. After
preparing the skin, an acid concentration from 20% to 70% will be
applied. Acids loosen or dissolve the glue-like substance that
holds the outer layer cells to each other and to the underlying skin.
These thick, piled up, clinging cells are responsible for the appearance
of rough, dry, scaly skin, and brown age or sun damage spots. When the
"glue" is loosened, the outer skin sloughed away, leaving the underlying
skin with a smooth, moist, refined, vibrant appearance. The acid loosens
the dead cells which block the follicles and cause acne. Once the
follicle clears, the acid continues to work to prevent acne from
recurring.
Second - Acid affects deeper layers of the skin by
regenerating collagen and elastin. Clinical studies show marked
disappearance of fine lines and reduction of coarser, deeper wrinkles

Alpha hydroxy
acids or AHAs, rejuvenate the skin by encouraging the shedding of old,
sun-damaged surface skin cells. Glycolic acid is the alpha hydroxy acid
most frequently used for facial treatments. An ideal treatment for busy
people who are unable to take time off work for a deeper peel or laser
resurfacing, peels gently retexture the skin over a period of a few
months. (A peel treatment takes about 15 - 20 minutes!)
